As any orthodontist can tell you, sugar is definitely not the best choice for your teeth or your braces. Consuming too many sugary foods can cause some serious damage. However, we understand that it is not realistic to expect our patients to never have dessert! If you’re going to treat yourself to something sweet, we recommend that you opt for ice cream or frozen yogurt. Dairy is great for building healthy teeth and bones, so the sugar in your dessert can be balanced with a few health benefits like calcium and probiotics (found in frozen yogurt). Here are some of our favorite ice cream and frozen yogurt spots around South Riding!
Our local Dairy Queen offers soft serve classics like cones, sundaes, and creamy shakes. DQ is known for their iconic blizzard treats, with tons of mix-in options. They also offer rotating and brand new seasonal specials on a regular basis. Looking for something with a little more nutrition? Try an Orange Julius smoothie!
Frozen yogurt contains probiotics, which are great for your digestive health. Zinga FroYo also contains less calories than most traditional ice cream, making it a slightly lighter option. Zinga FroYo is a self-serve yogurt shop with over 50 topping options, so your possibilities are limitless.
Frozen custard is essentially premium ice cream with a small amount of egg yolk added for extra richness. Milwaukee Frozen Custard has a fun atmosphere, and features a model train and other fun things for kids to look at while they wait for their custard! They also offer kid-friendly tours of their facilities, which are very popular with kids in the community.
Tutti Fruiti
Tutti Fruiti is another chain of self serve yogurt shops with a location right here in South Riding! They have a great variety of flavors and a TON of toppings to choose from. From classic tart to creamy new flavors, they’ve got something for the whole family to enjoy!
Rita’s Italian Ice and Frozen Custard
Rita’s is a chain that started on the east coast but is quickly sweeping the nation with their delicious desserts! Rita’s serves Italian ice, cream ice, and frozen custard, and can make any combination of them you can imagine! Try a gelati, with layers of custard and Italian ice, or a blendini, with Italian ice and custard blended together with a mix in candy!
Remember, treats are ok as long as they are enjoyed in moderation. So treat yourself, but promise us you’ll brush your teeth after! Keeping your braces clean is super important for your dental health and orthodontic treatment.
