Does My Teen Need Braces?

There are a few key signs that your child needs braces sooner rather than later. These signs might be easy to spot such as over-crowded teeth, new teeth coming in at awkward angles or teeth with wide spaces in-between. However, some signs might not be as immediately obvious. If your teen experiences jaw popping, difficulty chewing, or frequently bites their cheeks or tongue, they may need braces due to a misaligned bite.

If you are not sure if braces are necessary, your best bet is to have a professional orthodontist access your smile to determine the best course of action.

Can I Wait To Get Braces?

We welcome patients of all ages to our office and regularly fit our adult patients with braces with great success. That said, early treatment is always ideal, so that minor issues don’t develop into more serious and costly problems over time. The teen years also offer unique benefits as facial structures develop during this time and can more easily be guided toward a healthy and symmetrical development.

Benefits of Early Treatment with Braces

  • Shortened Treatment Time
  • Improved facial symmetry by stimulating jaw growth
  • Preserved tooth health and minimized threat of damage to protruding teeth
  • Reduced need for tooth extraction
  • Preserve space for any unerupted teeth
  • Avoid chronic pain resulting from malocclusion

Braces for Teens

We offer both metal and ceramic braces. The type of braces that work best for you depends on your personal preference as well as your specific orthodontic needs.

Metal Braces

With metal braces, small metal brackets are attached to each tooth and connected with archwire. This archwire is slowly adjusted over time to guide teeth into position.

These are the strongest form of braces available. Metal braces are ideal for addressing significant malocclusion and pronounced crowding or spacing issues.

Ceramic Braces

Just as with metal braces, ceramic braces are comprized of brackets and archwire. However, ceramic brackets are made of a clear ceramic material that more closely resembles the natural color of your teeth. The wires and rubber bands used in ceramic braces are also available in clear material.

Ceramic braces can are an appealing option for anyone interested in more discreet braces.

Invisalign for Teens

Rather than using brackets and wires like traditional braces, the Invisalign system uses a series of custom-made, computer-generated plastic aligners to straighten your smile. Each set of aligners is designed to make small changes to the alignment of the teeth. As you switch sets of aligners about every two weeks, your teeth will be gradually, gently guided to their proper positions.

These custom-made clear aligners are easy to use and virtually undetectable against your smile.  Unlike traditional braces, aligners can also be easily removed by the patient. This makes Invisalign a great option for active teens who may choose to take out their aligners during athletic activities.
